Birmingham City University’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans society re-launched for the 07/08 academic year with one thing in mind, to create and stronger and more diverse LGBT society and with the recent award win at the "Activities and Sports Awards 2009 ", it seems we have done just that!
Building the society up from literally nothing, the current LGBT committee through hard work, careful planning and basic awareness of the society itself, has allowed for the a thriving LGBT society which has only one to go but up! We'd like to thank the LGBT members for a fantastic year and here's just a few of the highlights including the behind the scenes stuff that you probably didn't know about:
- We've secured ourselves a safe space room from the union. This room will be used if you need to talk to a committee member or even check out some literature. It currently is not in a central place but we're fighting to change this
- We've elected a representative to the SU council. This rep will make sure your voice is heard and is vital to the development of our society.
- We represented you at a national NUS LGBT conference. Our society hasn't been for four years so this was a great breakthrough. Our delegates networked with key NUS committee members who will help us over the next year where we're planning to work closely with them on a campaign.
- And that's not even including all the great socials we've had including the Hurst Street Hustle, Coalition and all the Thursday Funs...
We look forward to reaching higher in the year to come with the recent addition of the Campaigns and Representation Officer which will create a stronger political arm for the society to fight for the issues that face LGBT people in their everyday lives. Also carrying off where others have started is a new dedicated committee which will serve the LGBT society just as well as the previous one did.
We’ll see all the returning members in September and we can’t wait for the arrival of the potential new members at the freshers’ fair,
Look out for us!
Cheers
