Representation

One of the Union’s main roles is to represent all students at Birmingham City University.

Representation is vitally important to the Union. It means the Union is there to protect the rights of students, to make sure that students are able to get the most out of their time at Birmingham City University and to make sure all students are able to have their voices heard on the issues that matter to them.

The University and the Students’ Union have worked in partnership to develop a Student Representation system. The aim of this is to ensure students’ views are heard formally by the University. As part of this system the Union provides guidance, advice, publicity materials and training to help Student Reps represent students effectively.

What are Student Representatives?

Student Representatives (or Student Reps) are students who gather opinion from their fellow students, and represent their views at various university meetings. They also feed back the outcome of these meetings to students in order to help improve the quality of their experience at Birmingham City University. They are a link between the Students’ Union and students on their course, keeping students up to date with what the Students’ Union is doing as well as informing the Union of any concerns regarding their course. As a Student Rep you are in place to ensure that any student, no matter what course or campus, can have their say on issues affecting their education.

What are Faculty Representatives?

Faculty Student Representatives (or Faculty Reps) are like Student Reps but they work at a Faculty level. That means instead of only gathering opinion from students on their course, they gather feedback from all students in their Faculty, and represent their views at Faculty level meetings. There are two Faculty Reps for each of the six University faculties, who are elected by the students within that faculty. Faculty Reps also get paid £500 each year for the work they do.
